A Russian man was detained on Saturday after he unfurled a rainbow flag during an Olympic torch relay that was passing through his hometown of Voronezh. Security personnel quickly wrestled the man, Pavel Lebedev, to the ground, as seen in photos taken by a friend. The AP was able to reach Lebedev who told the news wire that he is still in custody and undergoing questioning by the police. “Hosting the games here contradicts the basic principles of the Olympics, which is to cultivate tolerance,” Lebedev said. Because of international backlash as a result of Putin signing anti-gay propaganda laws, “Russian authorities have put limits on the right to protest during the Sochi Olympics…” according to the NYDN. Initially Putin banned all protests during the Olympic games, but conceded to allow protests in designated areas.
