A man who claims to have had sex with Orlando shooter Omar Mateen told Univision that he believes the massacre was committed as an act of revenge rather than religious-driven terrorism. The man known only as Miguel said in an interview wearing a disguise that he had been seeing Mateen for two months, and he described their relationship as “friends with benefits.” He also claims that the 29-year-old mass murderer was “100%” gay and that his wife was well aware.
Miguel met Mateen in October 2015 over Grindr saying that he was “very sweet,” “looking for love,” and liked to “cuddle.”
When finding out about the shooter, Miguel said he had to speak out. “I’ve cried like you have no idea,” the man said “But the thing that makes me want to tell the truth is that he didn’t do it for terrorism. In my opinion, he did it for revenge.”
He also talked about the many times Mateen frequented Pulse. “He adored Latinos, gay Latinos, with brown skin, but he felt rejected,” Miguel said. “He felt used by them. There were moments in the Pulse nightclub that made him feel really bad. Guys used him. That really affected him. I believe this crazy horrible thing he did — that was revenge.”
So what drove Mateen to attack the nightclub?
According the Miguel, he was furious after finding out one of his sexual partners was HIV positive.
“He was terrified that he was infected,” Miguel said. “I asked him, ‘Did you do a test?’ Yes. He went to the pharmacy and did the test… It came out negative, but it doesn’t come out right away. It takes four, five months. When I asked him what he was going to do now, his answer was ‘I’m going to make them pay for what they did to me.’”
Senior FBI Profiler Mary Ellen O’Toole told CBS News that she believes the attack was motivated by internal homophobia: “This to me suggests somebody that may have had sexual identity issues and may have actually been struggling with the idea that he himself was gay and that would add a different motive and a different perspective on the case,” O’Toole said.
Miguel says that he has spoken to the FBI.
