Chelsea Manning Takes ‘First Steps of Freedom’

Chelsea Manning took her “first steps of freedom” today leaving the Fort Leavenworth military prison at 2 A.M., and she shared the news via a tweet and Instagram that shows her Converse shoes against a wood floor with the caption “first steps of freedom.”
President Obama communed whistleblower Chelsea Manning’s sentence earlier this year. Manning was sentenced to 35 years for her involvement in leaking classified information via Wikileaks concerning American military and diplomatic activities, activists felt that if Manning were to carry out her entire sentence she would have died in prison—as Manning twice tried to commit suicide,

“I appreciate the wonderful support that I have received from so many people across the world over these past years,” Manning said to ABC.“The past will always affect me and I will keep that in mind while remembering that how it played out is only my starting point, not my final destination.”
