At the Palm Springs Art Museum, Q+ Art is a continuous in-house initiative that displays the works of queer artists year round. “Q+ Art amplifies voices that have long been marginalized, remedies conventional narratives of art history, and celebrates the rich diversity of queer expression,” says Q+ Art Curator-at-Large, David Evans Frantz.
Museum visitors can view “Lake Verea: DarkRooms and Other Games,” an exhibition from Mexico City-based artists Francisca Rivero-Lake and Carla Verea, more commonly known as Lake Verea. As queer women and collaborators, Verea and Lake bring intimate portraits of architecture to the stage with experimental photographic techniques. This exhibition runs through Sept. 13.
On view through October is “A Queer Arcana: Art, Magic, and Spirit.” This exhibition displays the work of an intergenerational group of artists exploring magic, spirituality and esoteric knowledge as they have historically interacted with queer art and culture though the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. “Arcana” means hidden and mystical knowledge, and this exhibition observes how “queer artists have turned to obscure spiritual practices as sources of connection and transformation.”
Q+ Art’s ongoing exhibition “Tender Swagger: Works by LGBTQ+ Artists from the Collection,” can also be seen. This exhibition rotates new loaned works alongside a permanent collection by LGBTQ+ artists who explore themes of identity, community and connection in their work.
Q+ Art reveres its home of Palm Springs as a hub for LGBTQ+ culture in the U.S. and continues to advance the recognition of queer artists and art histories. It is the only program of its kind dedicated to queer art and artists within a general art museum.
