In Mobile, Alabama, tourism agency Visit Mobile is standing up for LGBTQ+ visitors and residents alike, reiterating their commitment to inclusivity in the coastal city. Last week, however, local pastor Travis Johnson urged the organization to avoid the promotion of Pride events due to alleged “friction” they cause in the community, according to 1819 News.
“Nobody’s trying to stop anybody from whatever decision they make. Just don’t use taxpayer money” Johnson said. Johnson is a member of the organization’s board of directors, but has been outnumbered in his beliefs on Pride events. Visit Mobile is funded by local lodging taxes, and promotional materials for Pride on their social media accounts have been met with backlash before.
A recent Facebook post featuring an image of a Pride parade in the city, accompanied by the caption “Love thrives in Mobile. Celebrate Pride Month, love and community at these events in the Port City,” was met with hate online as per 1819 News.
According to Visit Mobile’s website, the city has historically been called “the Paris of the South.” Known as a cultural center with a rich 325-year history. Despite its mix of political leanings, the city still hosts Pride events including a Pride ArtWalk, local block parties, and celebration of LGBTQ+ identities and love.
In response to Johnson’s claims, Visit Mobile reiterated that it would continue promoting local events for everyone: “Visit Mobile’s mission is to attract visitors to experience Mobile to increase economic impact and sustainability,” said senior public relations and communications manager Ashley Rains. “We historically and without bias represent our local hospitality partners, community and destination to interest-based travel markets in order to achieve this mission successfully and purposefully. These partners include restaurants, hotels, shops and businesses.”
“Visit Mobile will continue to remain intentional and a welcoming destination for everyone,” she said. The site continues to feature a page of scheduled Pride month events.
